Pike is one of the most popular predator fish anglers all over the world love to target. These sleek and powerful fish have been caught up to 45lbs in weight and require different types of fishing hooks and tackle. The camouflage of the pike is on of their best assets, they can hide patiently, remaining well camouflaged in weeds and snags, waiting for its prey to swim unsuspectingly past. The choice of prey for the pike is predominantly smaller fish, frogs and mice, although birds and ducklings are also targets. Having the right tackle and fishing hooks are extremely important when targeting Pike.

1. The Bucktail: This truly is my all-time preferred artificial lure. I prefer white or lime-green colors in or 1 oz. size. Ball head style is fine but a sharp nosed bullet design will function nicely in fast moving water. I trim the bucktail to just behind the hook. I usually fish it tipped-off with a brief strip of pork rind having a split tail. White pork rind or green appears to function best. I function the bucktail along the bottom with a fairly slow jigging stroke. I lift the tip of the rod about two feet and slowly let the lure settle back towards the bottom, by no means letting slack create within the line. I let it lay on the bottom for a fraction of a second following which start the cycle again. The strike will always come on the drop or as the lure sits on the bottom. I'm usually prepared to strike the fish aggressively. Sharp hooks are a should.

Fly fishing is a particular passion of mine. Matching wits with wily trout and salmon is something I enjoy tremendously. Casting across a fast-running stream, I'm always full of apprehension -- will the fish strike? Will I be able to win the fight? Although I usually do win, I'm very likely to return the fish to the water, since it's the sport, not the eating, that's important to me. On "fishing days," I relish the ritual of selecting and packing up the right combination of fly fishing tackle for the day's excursion. One piece of gear I find myself reaching for quite often is my Loop Opti Speedrunner reel. Read on to find out why it's a favourite of mine.
