The best thing a beginning fly fisher can do is their research. Books, the internet, videos, and most of all classes hold valuable information that can save you years of trial and error on your own. At this stage too, it helps to have a visual guide to the steps of fly fishing. In many cases a class will either provide you with gear to practice on or help you to purchase the correct gear for your needs. A beginning fisherman should have a basic outfit with an entry-level rod and reel – at least until he becomes comfortable with the sport. So once you have done your research and picked out your gear, the next step to becoming a confident fisherman is practicing your cast.
Fly fishing is all about casting. It is the most important still to master because it can help you with the other necessary skills. If you do not have the skill to find the fish, for instance, you can use your casting skills to locate them. If you cannot cast however, it does not help you at all to know where the fish are. The key here is to practice your cast as often as you can. Finally, pull everything together and go try your new skills out on the fish. Just remember that no fisherman is ever done learning.
